Industry and Market Background New technical innovations are enabling individuals to use mobile devices that are much smaller and more powerful than ever. Mobile devices are moving from personal information managers to powerful business orientated computing platforms. Gartner Group estimates that wireless PDAs will increase from 12.5 million units in 2004 to 15 million units in 2005, and the proportion of PDA purchases made by organizations will increase from 44 percent in 2004 to 55 percent in 2006. (Source: Gartner Analyst Todd Kort, March 2005 and Gartner report October 2005) Product Overview Socket's products may be classified into four broad product families: Data Collection products These products include bar code scanning and RFID solutions that plug into or connect wirelessly to mobile devices and convert mobile devices into portable bar code scanners or RFID readers that can be used in various retail and industrial workplaces. These products represented 38% of Socket's revenue during its third quarter of fiscal 2005. Connectivity products These are connection devices that can be plugged into standard expansion slots in handheld computers and connect mobile devices over wireless and wired connections. These products allow users to connect their devices to the Internet via mobile or wired phone services, or to private networks, or to communicate with other electronic devices such as desktop computers and printers. Wireless connection products include cards using Bluetooth, and cards for connecting to local wireless networks using the Wireless LAN 802.11b (or Wi-Fi) standard. Stand alone cordless products using Bluetooth technology include a GPS receiver, a 56K modem, a laser bar code scanner, and a general purpose serial I/O port. Cable connection products include modems for telephone connections and Ethernet cards for local area network connections. These products represented 34% of Socket's revenue during its third quarter of fiscal 2005. Serial products These add connection ports to a notebook or handheld computer that allow users to connect these portable computers to standard peripherals designed primarily for desktop PCs. These products represented 14% of Socket's third quarter of fiscal 2005 revenues. Embedded (OEM) products and services Socket's Development Services team focuses on embedding Bluetooth modules, and soon Wireless LAN modules into third party mobile devices. These modules include Socket's extensive Bluetooth and Wireless LAN software suites including software management tools such as Bluetooth Connect!Agent and Wi-Fi Companion. Socket's Bluetooth and soon Wireless LAN modules allow manufacturers of handheld computers and other devices to build wireless connection functions into their products. These products represented 14% of Socket's revenues during its third quarter of fiscal 2005.
